Household Economy Analysis (HEA) Livelihoods Explorer Database

BSS Setup

The BSS Setup menu contains administrative screens for adding and managing Source Organizations, Livelihood Zones, Livelihood Zone Baselines, Baseline corrections, and Communities.

Source Organizations

Each Baseline Storage Sheet (BSS) uploaded to the database must have an associated Source Organization. The Source Organization is the organization that produced the BSS and is responsible for any corrections or maintenance needed. The Source Organization is an owner of the Baseline but may not be the only owner of the Baseline.

Source Organizations have three fields:

  • Name (required): A short name for display.

  • Full name (required): The full name of the organization.

  • Description: Any extra information or detail about the organization that may be relevant.

Example

Name: SC

Full name: Save the Children

Livelihood Zones

Each BSS uploaded to the database must have an associated Livelihood Zone. Livelihood Zones may be associated with more than one BSS, but each BSS can only have one Livelihood Zone.

Livelihood Zones have the following fields:

  • Code (required): The primary identifier for the Livelihood Zone. This code should be unique.

  • Alternate code: An alternate identifier for the Livelihood Zone, typically a meaningful code based on the name of the Zone.

  • Country (required): The country of the Livelihood Zone.

  • Name (English) (required): An English name for the Livelihood Zone.

  • Name (French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic): Names in additional languages are optional.

  • Description (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic): Livelihood Zone descriptions can be added in any available language.

See the Baseline Data Collection section for best practices on developing codes for new Livelihood Zones.

Livelihood Zone Baselines

BSS can be added individually and managed from this screen. Baselines contain the following fields:

  • Livelihood Zone (required): The Livelihood Zone associated with this Baseline.

    • Livelihood Zone alternate code: Inherited from the chosen Livelihood Zone.

    • Country: Inherited from the chosen Livelihood Zone.

  • Name (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic): Names for the Livelihood Zone Baseline in available languages.

  • Primary Livelihood System (required): Primary Livelihood Systems include choices such as cropping, agropastoral, and urban.

  • Source Organization (required): The organization that produced the BSS and is responsible for any corrections or maintenance needed. If the Source Organization does not exist, a new one can be added from this screen.

  • BSS Excel file (required): The original BSS file in an .xlsx format with all rows and columns unhidden and iterative calculation setting turned on.

  • BSS language: The language in which the BSS is written.

  • Profile reports PDF file (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic): PDF files of profile reports associated with the BSS can be added.

  • Reference year start date (required): The first day of the month in which the reference year begins. You can use the calendar date picker or enter the date in the format YYYY-MM-DD. For example, if the reference year begins in April of 2023, enter a date of April 1, 2023 as 2023-04-01.

  • Reference year end date (required): The last day of the month in which the reference year ends. You can use the calendar date picker or enter the date in the format YYYY-MM-DD. For example, if the reference year ends in March of 2024, enter a date of March 31, 2024 as 2024-03-31.

  • Valid from date: Enter the first day of the month that the Baseline is valid from. You can use the calendar date picker or enter the date in the format YYYY-MM-DD. For example, if the baseline is valid starting in April of 2023, enter a date of April 1, 2023 as 2023-04-01. The database and Explorer use the Valid from date to differentiate multiple Baselines within a zone.

  • Valid to date: This will usually be left blank for new Baselines and only completed when a Baseline becomes invalid or a new Baseline is available for the Livelihood Zone. Enter the last day of the last month in which the Baseline is valid, typically 10 years from the Valid from date. You can use the calendar date picker or enter the date in the format YYYY-MM-DD. For example, if the baseline is valid through May of 2023 but a new Baseline should be used starting in June 2023, enter a date of May 31, 2023 as 2023-05-31.

  • Data collection start date: The date that the data collection for the Baseline began. Use YYYY-MM-DD format.

  • Data collection end date: The date that the data collection for the Baseline ended. Use YYYY-MM-DD format.

  • Publication date: The date the Baseline was published. Use YYYY-MM-DD format.

  • Currency (required): The default currency for income and expenditures from the Livelihood Activities within this Baseline.

  • Description (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic): Livelihood Zone Baseline descriptions can be added in any available language.

Additional

There are some additional fields related to the Baseline that you can choose to view or edit.

  • Information about the BSS upload: such as content hash, upload date and time, and the file size. This information allows for verification of which file version is loaded in the system.

  • Population source and estimate: The estimated population of the Livelihood Zone during the reference year and the data source for that estimate, e.g. National Bureau of Statistics. Although different organizations may choose to use alternate sources of population data when conducting outcome analysis, it is common for the organization that conducts the Baseline survey to provide a population estimate for the Livelihood Zone at the time of the Baseline.

  • Read only BSS info: This includes the main staple, household size and survival non-food expenditure for the Poor Wealth Group, along with the cost of annual kcals. This information can assist in troubleshooting the loading of Baselines.

Livelihood Zone Baseline corrections

Existing Baselines will list all associated corrections at the end of the page. New corrections can be added from this screen as well.
